How do you translate a menu from a photo?
Open Lens App, photograph the whole menu page in even light, and choose your language. The app reads the printed text, translates each line, and keeps prices next to the dish they belong to. Tap any single item for a short plain-language description of what the dish usually contains and how it is served.
Fact: Menu body text is often set at 7 to 9 points, smaller than most books. Moving the phone closer reads better than zooming in afterward, because a crop only enlarges pixels that were never captured.
One photo, the whole page translated
You sit down, the menu arrives, and it is four columns of text in a script you cannot sound out. Typing dish names into a translator one at a time takes ten minutes and you still end up ordering the safest looking thing. A photo skips that. How to photograph a menu so the text actually reads
Hold the phone flat above the page rather than at an angle. A steep angle compresses the far end of the menu and the last two lines turn to mush. If the menu is a large folded card, shoot it in two halves instead of trying to fit everything in one frame. Two clear photos beat one wide blurry one every time.
Restaurant lighting is the real enemy. Candles, warm pendant lamps, and laminated pages produce a bright hot spot that erases whole lines. Tilt the menu a few degrees until the reflection slides off the text, or lift it toward a window. Turning on the flash usually makes glare worse on glossy stock, so try without it first.
If you only get one shaky shot before the waiter comes back, it may still be usable. Dish names that need context, not a word swap
Literal translation gets you into trouble fast. A dish translated as "ant climbing a tree" is glass noodles with minced pork. "Head cheese" contains no cheese. "Sweetbreads" are not sweet and are not bread. A direct rendering is accurate and completely unhelpful, and this is where most phrase-by-phrase tools stop.

That last part saves money. Ordering three plates that each turn out to be a full main course is a common and expensive mistake.
Regional names shift too. The same word can mean a soup in one province and a fried snack two hundred kilometers away. When a name is ambiguous, the app says so rather than picking one and sounding confident. If you want to dig further into a specific plate, photographing the dish itself and asking what is this often gets you closer than the menu text did.
Ingredients, allergies, and where a translation stops
A translated menu is a good first pass and a poor final answer. Kitchens substitute. Fish sauce hides in dressings, butter finishes sauces that read as vegetable, stock is rarely listed, and a shared fryer puts gluten into things the menu never mentions. No app reading a printed page can see any of that.
So use the translation to narrow your options, then confirm with a person. The same caution applies to unfamiliar ingredients. Wild mushroom and game dishes on a seasonal menu are prepared by a kitchen with a supplier, and that is a different situation from anything you might find yourself. If you have a serious allergy or a medical dietary restriction, treat the app as a translation aid and rely on the restaurant staff and your own medical guidance for the decision.
Chalkboards, handwriting, and daily specials
The specials board is usually where the good food is and it is almost always handwritten. Chalk on slate, marker on a whiteboard, cursive on brown paper. Handwriting is genuinely harder to read than print, and results depend on how consistent the writer is. Neat block capitals do well. Fast looping cursive with abbreviated units is hit and miss.
A few things help. Get square to the board, not to one side. Fill the frame with the section you care about rather than the whole board plus the door frame. Shoot from far enough back that your shadow is not across the text. If a line comes back garbled, crop tighter and try that line alone.
Printed menus with heavy design also test the reader. White text on a photo background, gold foil, letterpress on textured card. If a line fails, the fix is almost always a closer photo of that single line with the phone parallel to the page.
Which languages come up at the table

The scripts people find hardest to work around manually are the ones with no shared alphabet, because you cannot even type the word into a search box. Those are exactly the cases where a photo is the only practical route.
Vertical Japanese menus and right to left Arabic layouts need column and reading order handled correctly, not just character recognition. Getting the order wrong turns a price list into nonsense. We treat layout as part of the job rather than an afterthought.
Bilingual menus are common in tourist districts and they are sometimes worse than monolingual ones, because the English column is often a rough translation from years ago with dishes that no longer exist. Reading the original column and translating that yourself gives you the current menu.
The rest of the trip, same camera
Menus are the start. Train ticket machines, pharmacy labels, museum plaques, parking signs, and supermarket packaging all respond to the same photo and read approach. Once the habit forms you stop planning around language barriers and just point the phone at the problem.
The camera is also useful for things that are not text at all. A tree in a plaza you cannot name, a bird on the hotel balcony, a beetle on the terrace wall, a strange coin in your change. Does menu translation work without an internet connection?
Translation runs in the cloud, so you need a connection for a new scan. Cafe wifi or a local data plan is enough. If you are somewhere without signal, photograph the menu anyway and run it when you reconnect. The image stays in your camera roll and translates just as well later.
Can it read a menu photo I took last week?
Yes. Any photo in your library works the same as a fresh capture. People often photograph menus in a window display before deciding whether to go in, then translate while walking. Older screenshots from a restaurant website work too, as long as the text is legible at full size.
How accurate is it on handwritten specials boards?
Print is more reliable than handwriting. Clear block letters usually read well, and fast cursive is inconsistent. If a line comes back wrong, take a tighter photo of that line alone with the phone parallel to the board. That single change fixes most handwriting failures.
Will it keep prices matched to the right dish?
That is part of the layout handling. Prices in a right hand column or in a dotted leader line stay attached to their item. Very unusual designs, like prices printed in a separate block at the bottom, can confuse any reader, so glance at the original to sanity check before you order.
Can I use it to ask about an allergy?
You can generate your question in the local language and show it to the server. That is more reliable than speaking across an accent gap. Do not treat the translated menu itself as an ingredient guarantee, since kitchens substitute and shared equipment is never listed on a menu.
What if the menu is on a wall or a lit board above the counter?
Backlit boards work if you avoid direct glare and shoot straight on rather than from below. Step back to reduce the upward angle, then zoom slightly with your feet instead of the pinch gesture. If the top rows are washed out, photograph the sections separately.
